Today we drove to Palmer to check out the Matanuska glacier - Alaska's largest glacier that you can get to by car. Glaciers are really fascinating - you can read more here.
On the way we saw some moose. We walked around the glacier for several hours and saw a lot of interesting formations.
Although it was cold (about 20 degrees), we had a lot of sunshine which makes the ice look blue - ask your science teacher why (it isn't actually blue). There were some areas where we had to squeeze into some tight spots which was a lot of fun!
Tomorrow I start my conference! I hope your week is going well!

hi those look cool
ReplyDeleteThey really were!
Deletewhere are you right now?
ReplyDeleteStill in Anchorage. It’s only 6:15 in the morning, so I’m just getting ready to go to my conference.
Deletehow cold is it where you are !
ReplyDeleteIt is 8 degrees right now (brrrr) but it get up to about 20 later.
DeleteWe are loving your updates and seeing your pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe glaciers are so beautiful. Were you claustrophobic at all?
We saw Woof!
- Little Sharks!
When I was inside the squeeze, I was not claustrophobic but I did have a moment of worry about earthquakes! Tonight’s blog will talk about how often they have them here. I haven’t felt any ... yet!
DeleteMoriah from Mrs. Abbott's class wants to know what adaptations the moose have to survive in that climate.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know the answer to that, Moriah, but I can try to find out for you!
DeleteMrs. Abbott wants to know if you have special cleats on your boots so you don't slip on your hike.
ReplyDeleteGreat question! Yes, we had something called micro spikes on which fit over your boot and are very similar to cleats.
DeleteMcKenzie B. wants to know if those helped you to not slip on the ice.
DeleteHi Mrs. Redfern! It looks like you're having fun! We want to know how many hours of daylight you are having? Are you going to see the Northern Lights? Mrs. Hovan's class.
ReplyDeleteHello! We’re having more daylight than I expected. It gets light around 7:00 am and gets dark around 6 pm, so not too much different from Connecticut.
DeleteGreetings Mrs. Redfern from Mr. H. and the OCS Hawks. We are so proud to be represented by one of Oxford's Finest at this prestigious happening. Thank you for making it possible for us to live vicariously through your experiences. I certainly know that you are highly capable and more than courageous enough to handle all the adventures that await. I hope Mr. Redfern is keeping up...:)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mr. H! I really appreciate your support and the support of all of our awesome Hawks!

DeleteThe ice sculptures look wickid cool. How are they made?
ReplyDeleteI wish I had seen them being made, I bet it was pretty amazing. I don't know what tools they used, but I did see that they all started with a just a large block of snow - probably 8 feet tall!
