A day on a glacier!

Hi, OCS!
Today we drove to Palmer to check out the Matanuska glacier - Alaska's largest glacier that you can get to by car.  Glaciers are really fascinating - you can read more here.
On the way we saw some moose.  We walked around the glacier for several hours and saw a lot of interesting formations.
Although it was cold (about 20 degrees), we had a lot of sunshine which makes the ice look blue - ask your science teacher why (it isn't actually blue). There were some areas where we had to squeeze into some tight spots which was a lot of fun!

My husband, Mr. Redfern, came with me!

Tomorrow I start my conference!  I hope your week is going well!

    1. When I was inside the squeeze, I was not claustrophobic but I did have a moment of worry about earthquakes! Tonight’s blog will talk about how often they have them here. I haven’t felt any ... yet!

    1. Great question! Yes, we had something called micro spikes on which fit over your boot and are very similar to cleats.

  6. Hi Mrs. Redfern! It looks like you're having fun! We want to know how many hours of daylight you are having? Are you going to see the Northern Lights? Mrs. Hovan's class.

    1. Hello! We’re having more daylight than I expected. It gets light around 7:00 am and gets dark around 6 pm, so not too much different from Connecticut.

    1. They were just hanging out on the side of the road. They are very common along certain stretches of the highway where their favorite bushes grow.

  17. I wish I had seen them being made, I bet it was pretty amazing. I don't know what tools they used, but I did see that they all started with a just a large block of snow - probably 8 feet tall!
